การจำแนก welding processes แบ่งออกเป็นกลุ่มใหญ่ ได้แก่ arc welding, brazing, oxyfuel gas welding, resistance welding, solid-state welding, soldering และกระบวนการเชื่อมอื่น ๆ โดยแต่ละกลุ่มประกอบด้วยกระบวนการย่อยที่มีหลักการให้ความร้อนและการประสานวัสดุแตกต่างกัน เช่น arc welding ใช้ความร้อนจาก arc ได้แก่ SMAW, GMAW, GTAW, FCAW, PAW และ SAW ขณะที่ resistance welding ใช้ความร้อนจากความต้านทานไฟฟ้าร่วมกับแรงกด เช่น spot welding, seam welding และ projection welding ส่วน solid-state welding ทำให้เกิดการยึดประสานโดยไม่มีการหลอมละลายของโลหะฐาน เช่น friction welding, diffusion welding, explosion welding และ ultrasonic welding
ระบบตัวอักษรย่อช่วยระบุ welding process อย่างเป็นมาตรฐานและกระชับสำหรับการเขียนแบบ เอกสาร WPS, PQR และข้อกำหนดงานเชื่อม ตัวอย่างเช่น SMAW หมายถึง shielded metal arc welding, GMAW หมายถึง gas metal arc welding, GTAW หมายถึง gas tungsten arc welding, OFW หมายถึง oxyfuel gas welding และ RW หมายถึง resistance welding นอกจากนี้ยังรวมถึง allied processes เช่น thermal spraying, thermal cutting, oxygen cutting และ adhesive bonding
